Tombol Suntingan Universal (TSU) adalah simbol pensil hijau 
di batang alamat di penjelajah Anda yang menandakan bahwa halaman yang sedang dibuka dapat disunting. Simbol ini hampir sama dengan simbol RSS 
yang menandakan bahwa halaman tersebut memiliki RSS feed.
Untuk dapat melihat simbol TSU, pasanglah extension Firefox ini, (catatan pemasangan).

Tombol Suntingan Universal (TSU) memberitahu peselancar web bahwa situs yang sedang dibuka dapat disunting. Mereka diundang untuk berkontribusi dan menambah informasi bersama. Dengan semakin bertambah umumnya proses seperti ini, tombol ini dapat menjadi semacam lencana kehormatan dan mendorong perusahan-perusahaan dan pembuat-pembuat situs agar menambahkan komponen (semacam wiki) yang dapat disunting secara publik di situs mereka.
Dengan tujuan di atas, kami mengharapkan supaya tombol ini menjadi katalis untuk mempercepat terwujudnya web yang bebas disunting secara umum, dan juga mempercepat tren masyarakat dalam membuat sumber-sumber bersama yang berharga.

Visi awal Tim Berners-Lee untuk web ialah medium baca-tulis. Namun semakin bertambahnya usia web, hanya sedikit situs yang menawarkan kemampuan menulis kepada para pengunjungnya. Web menjadi medium "baca-saja". Banyak orang yang menyelancari web, namun hanya sedikit yang menyunting web.
Semakin lama, para pengguna wiki dan orang-orang yang gemar menyunting menyebarluaskan ide bahwa web seharusnya dapat disunting oleh siapa pun dan kapan pun juga. Kesuksesan Wikipedia, yang diikuti oleh wiki lainnya seperti wikiHow, AboutUs, wikiTravel, dan Wikia menunjukkan bahwa suntingan terbuka dapat menciptakan sumber-sumber informasi berkualitas. Situs-situs "baca-saja" semakin banyak yang menambahkan kemampuan untuk para pengunjungnya untuk berpartisipasi. Wiki-wiki bermunculan sebagai produk-produk piranti lunak perusahaan seperti yang ditawarkan oleh Google. Seiiring dengan bertambahnya situs yang dapat disunting setiap harinya, pengguna web semakin mahir dan kreatif dalam menciptakan alat-alat yang memungkinkan kolaborasi bebas.

Percakapan mengenai ide ini berasal dari RoCoCo (sebuah KampPerubahanTerbaru (RCC)) di Montreal 2007, dan diskusi tersebut berlanjut di wiki AboutUs. Di RCC Palo Alto 2008, segelintir orang menindaklanjuti ide ini, tertarik dengan hasil yang mereka capai, dan akhirnya membantu menyebarluaskan ide ini.
Banyak ide yang diusulkan dan didesain oleh para penyunting wiki untuk simbol Tombol Suntingan Universal (TSU), seperti yang nampak di logo wiki ini. Simbol yang digunakan sekarang dipilih dari sebuah usul yang dibuat oleh Ward Cunningham pada permulaan diskusi. Dengan bertambahnya pengadopsian tombol tersebut, komunitas penyunting web mungkin akan memutuskan untuk mengubah simbol tersebut. Untuk sekarang ini, tujuan kami adalah untuk membuat simbol untuk berbagai platform (dimulai dengan wiki) dan bahasa; sederhana, namun dengan jelas menunjukkan maksudnya.
