ユニバーサル・エディット・ボタンは鉛筆をあしらった緑のアイコン で、あるウェブページが編集できるということを示すものです。これはオレンジ色の「通知」RSSアイコン がRSSフィードが有りますよと示しているのと似ています。

あなたのブラウザでこのユニバーサル・エディット・ボタンを見るためには、このFirefox拡張をインストールしてください, (インストール手順). 将来は、RSSフィードボタンを扱うように、ウェブブラウザが直接このユニバーサル・エディット・ボタンをサポートすることを期待しています。

[edit] どうしてユニバーサル・エディット・ボタンが必要なのでしょう?

ユニバーサル・エディット・ボタン(UEB) は、サイトが編集可能だということをウェブ利用者に対してより素早く伝えます。これは既に貢献しようとしている訪問者へは簡便さを提供し、共有の知識を構築することの喜びにまだ目覚めていない訪問者へは編集への招待となります。このような公共の場での共同編集が常識化するにつれて、このボタンは名誉の証として認識されるようになることでしょう。それはまた、企業やサイト開発者に対して、このボタン を彼らのサイトに表示するために、参加者による編集機能を追加してもらう動機付けにもなるでしょう。

これらによって、わたしたちはこのボタンが編集可能なウェブ(the editable web)を推進し、価値ある公共財を作り上げるという社会の方向性を加速する助けとなることを期待しています。

ティム・バーナーズ・リー(Tim Berners-Lee) 氏の初期の構想にあったウェブは 読み書きのできるメディアでした。ウェブは成熟しましたが、ユーザに書き込みや編集を許しているウェブサイトはあまり多くありません。いまのところのウェブは「読むだけ」のメディアになってしまったのです。誰もがネットを閲覧しますが編集を楽しむ人の数は限られています。

何年にも渡って、Wikiの参加者やその他の編集フレンドリーな人々はウェブが誰でもいつでも編集できる場所であるべきだ、というアイデアを広めてきました。ウィキペディア(Wikipedia)の成功と、wikiHow, AboutUs, wikiTravel, WikiaといったWikiの活用事例が、編集をオープンにすることが高品質な情報リソースを実現するのだという証拠となっています。「読むだけ」のウェブサイトも、誰でも参加できるという能力を少しずつ増やしつつあります。現在のWikiは、事業用のソフトウェア製品でも、グーグルのようなコンシューマ向けインターネットの巨大サービスによっても、利用されています。インターネットがより編集可能になったそのあかつきには、ネットユーザは情報の共有を助けるツールによってより熟練し、クリエイティブになることでしょう。

このアイデアについての議論はモントリオールで2007年に開催された RoCoCo (a RecentChangesCamp) で始まり、その後 AboutUsウィキ で続けられました。パロアルトで2008年に行なわれた RCC では、多くの参加者がこのアイデアについて考え、自動発見(auto-discovery)を行なわせることに興奮し、アイデアを広めることを手伝ってくれました。

たいへん多くのアイデアがwiki参加者から提案され、設計されました。その証拠がこのWikiサイトのロゴです。現在のアイコンはワード・カニンガム(Ward Cunningham)氏が議論の開始時に提案したものの中から選択されました。ユニバーサル・エディット・ボタンの普及にしたがって、ウェブ編集コミュニティではアイコンを修正するかもしれません。それまでの間、わたしたちの目標はこのボタンを(ウィキをはじめとした)様々なプラットフォームで推進し、特定の言語に依存することなく、シンプルで、しかし編集できるという情報を強く伝えるものとすることです。
